Initial Thoughts

San Francisco Watershed... At first I had absolutely no idea what it meant. Even after having discussed it in class I'm still not entirely sure what it means. For that matter I'm not entirely sure what it is exactly we will be doing with the other class other than creating an atlas of some kind. Hopefully everything will become a lot more clear sooner rather than later.

I started doing some research on watersheds in San Francisco. I already am pretty familiar with San Francisco history as it has become a hobby with me and knew that there had been creeks throughout the city... it also helps when your grandma was a born and raised in the city. She's told me tons of stories of streets flooding and how she could roller-skate clear to the ocean when she was little but I never really thought much of it until now; I love hearing the stories of her childhood but I never thought much of the stories of streets flooding until now. Maybe I should ask her more questions to gain new insight on the topic.

Most of the websites I've looked at do not paint a full picture of the Islais Creek Watershed but instead just has little bits and pieces. Everything seems to focus on one or two aspects of some issue, whether it is the restoration of the creeks or what it used to look like, etc. The general consensus is that the watershed has basically disappeared and that the city would benefit from restoring it and bringing these natural creeks back to the surface. I think that this is an excellent idea; afterall, these water sources were carved out of the earth for a reason. I always think its a pity that human beings forget to take care of their environment until it is too late and that the history of a location is forgotten.

I also looked up some information on the San Pedro Creek Watershed as it was mentioned in class last week. This particular watershed is significant for me because it is located literally less than 5 minutes away from my house and I remember what it looked like before it was restored. I look forward to having a field trip even though I've been there many times because I now have a new appreciation for the changes that were made.
